About the festival
Iganmode Cultural Festival, also known as Odun Omo Iganmode, is an annual cultural celebration of the Awori Yoruba people of Ota, Ogun State. The week-long festival features traditional music, dancing, masquerades, cultural displays and community gatherings that celebrate Ota’s heritage and identity.
History
The festival began in 1992, originally known as Iganmode Day. It was established to commemorate Iganmode, regarded in Ota’s tradition as an important Awori historical figure, and to bring Awori sons and daughters together to celebrate their heritage. It has since developed into a major annual cultural event.
Significance
Iganmode Festival helps preserve and promote Awori traditions, ancestral heritage, unity and community identity. A major feature is the appearance of Egungun masquerades, which hold important cultural and spiritual significance among the Awori people of Ota. The festival also promotes cultural tourism and provides a platform for showcasing Ota's traditional arts and heritage.
